The following shotguns/calibres are unsuitable for the purposes indicated:

Riot guns and Shotguns with barrels shorter than 26 inches — banned at clay shooting ranges. Also unsuitable for bird shooting because of inferior patterns and high wounding rates.

.410 shotguns are unsuitable for bird shooting except quail, but ideal to teach youngsters to shoot clays. Also used to shoot vermin (snakes, mynahs).

Punt guns (e.g. 4-bore) are illegal in all provinces and now obsolete for bird shooting but definitely of interest to collectors.

Semi-automatic shotguns are illegal for hunting in many provinces (even if the magazine is blocked off)
