The following shotguns/calibres are unsuitable for the purposes indicated:
- Riot guns and Shotguns with barrels shorter than 26 inches — banned at clay shooting ranges. Also unsuitable for bird shooting because of inferior
patterns and high wounding rates.
- .410 shotguns are unsuitable for bird shooting except quail, but ideal to teach youngsters to shoot clays. Also used to shoot vermin (snakes, mynahs).
- Punt guns (e.g. 4-bore) are illegal in all provinces and now obsolete for bird shooting but definitely of interest to collectors.
- Semi-automatic shotguns are illegal for hunting in many provinces (even if the magazine is blocked off)
